Caring for Pearls

July 30, 2006

With pearls holding such an important place in a woman's
jewelry wardrobe, it is imperative to care for them
properly so that they may last a lifetime.
To begin with, pearls should be strung on a silk
thread, and knotted between each pearl. Pearls should be
restrung on average once a year, or every other year. If
they are worn everyday, they may need restringing every six
months. Restringing not only makes the strand more secure,
it also freshens the look of the pearls and allows the
jeweler to clean and inspect the pearls.
Once the pearls are properly strung, care should be
taken to keep them looking as beautiful as possible.
Pearls are rather porous, so perfume, makeup and hairspray
should be applied and given time to dry before wearing the
strand. In addition, keeping the strand out of water
(shower or pool) will help the silk thread last longer and
look better.
Also, pearls should not be kept in safety deposit boxes
for long periods of time, as the lack of humidity may cause
brittleness.
With a little care, pearls can look beautiful for many,
many years. Please feel free to contact Grinstein's with
any questions about caring for your jewelry.
